FreeFly "the free flying" (Olav Zipser)

The Freeflying concept since its introduction has created a opportunity for skydivers to fly in new ways.

FreeFlyers are Skydivers who do not fall, but fly through the sky.

They manipulate the airflow around their body in such way, that incredible pure human - non powered - flight performances and maneuvers are possible.

What Freeflyers can do in the sky nowadays, only 15 years ago was practically unimaginable and purely descirbed as a "dream":

FreeFly is human Flight.

Freefly, the art of Human Flight, started to develop in 1989 with the “father of FreeFly”, the German Olav Zipser and found its recognition in the official world of Sports in 1996. (1st official competition: X-Games Pro Tour).

The first official FAI nationals were hosted in the year 2000. At the year 2005 FreeFly was 1st times introduced to the Olympic World Games Comittee.

With  'Freefly’ you will learn to fly your own body freely in every possible direction, orientation and rotation while remaining in control of your flight  and trajectory (Olav 1989).

The general skill level is continuously progressing and evolving .  A FreeFlyer, in order to fully understand the aerodynamical power of his/her

own body in the atmosphere, needs to first learn controlled flying in the basic orientations: box position (the way of flying when we open our parachute), back flying, head-up flying, head-down flying, side flying,  angel flying.

These positions are not necessarily used static during the FreeFlight, but they are the base in order to fly and move freely in the air.

All the possible combinations of vertical and horizontal speeds, directions and orientations give you an idea of the "FREE" in Freeflying.

You can also move forward or backward (technique called tracking or more in general diagonal flying). All we need to do is to angle our body more or less compared to the horizon and (!) we can do this in all possible orientations. We have basically 360 degrees of possibilities in which to position our body compare to the horizontal or the vertical axes. Moreover, in the chosen flying trajectories, we can modify our speed by widening or diminishing  our body surface!! 3D pure.

The difference between us and a rigid wing relies in the fact that our body is very well and quick adjustable, so we can use this quality to modify the asset of our body by using all our joints. Once a student has learned to control his flight in all Freefly Basics, he/she can put together all the elements and free the imagination.

"Freefly is fly free where ever your creative spirit brings you without forgetting safety " (Olav)

FreeFly, more technical, is the concious manipulation of the human aerodynamical force-field (= the unbalance between low- and high-pressure areas in the close proximity around a falling person/skydiver).

The weight distribution inside the aerodynamical force-field can be categorized in 3 dominant groups:

- Stable Aerodynamics

- Unstable Aerodynamics

- Harmonic Aerodynamics
